What is the entry height of your 2018 Cherokee 274VFK? It sounds like the SolidStep Manual Fold-Down Steps you currently have installed are possibly a little short and you need something a little taller.

It could be that you got the incorrect control board or it was installed incorrectly but my guess is a problem with the door switch. You will need to make sure the magnet and the sensor for each door is positioned so they mate up. If they are not aligned properly, the sensors will not be able to recognize when the door is open or closed. One thing that will help is the Water Heater Door Conversion Kit for 6 Gallon Electric and Gas Water Heater - Black # DMC24FR, which comes with side brackets to cover up some of the gap. Use this you'd still have to layer on some sealant around the top and bottom but the problem is that you'll most likely still have water leaking in since the door is slightly into the hole instead of sitting flush against the wall of the trailer.

The fact that the power steps on your Newmar Kountry Star seem to operate fine when bypassing the control module does point to the controller being the issue. The other possibility is that the door switch on your trailer is bad, which you can also rule out by testing it with your circuit tester.

If you cannot get access to the nut, the only real way to get access to the needed nut will be to disassemble most of the # L1833.
